Significant progress has been made regarding the proposed ferry link connecting South Wales and North Devon. Recent reports indicate that the project is scaling up its ambitions to provide a viable alternative to the traditional M4 and M5 motorway corridors.
The updated operational model suggests a high frequency service with up to 20 crossings scheduled daily. By utilising high speed hydrogen powered vessels the crossing time between major hubs such as Swansea and North Devon could be reduced to under an hour. This frequency is intended to transform the channel into a functional commuting route rather than just a seasonal tourist link.
Affordability remains a central pillar of the initiative. Developers have set a target ticket price of £15 which positions the service as a highly competitive option for both commuters and leisure travelers. Furthermore the commitment to zero emission technology aligns with regional goals to reduce the carbon footprint of the transport sector. A recent public consultation reflected overwhelming support for the project with nearly 98 percent of respondents in favor of the maritime link.
💡 Plymouth’s iconic Smeaton’s Tower is to get a new set of lights to enable the tower to shine in the darkness
Plymouth City Council has announced a significant upgrade for Smeaton’s Tower as part of a broader commitment to preserve the city’s historic landmarks. The iconic red and white structure is set to receive a brand new lighting system designed to ensure it remains a visible beacon on the Hoe throughout the night.
This installation is a key component of a larger 7.25 million pound maintenance programme aimed at addressing a backlog of repairs across various council assets over the next three years. The decision to prioritize the tower follows an internal review which identified that the previous lighting system installed in 2015 has become obsolete. Due to the tower’s highly exposed coastal position the existing equipment has reached the end of its operational life and replacement parts are no longer readily available.
Plymouth City Council has announced a major 3.7 million pound investment aimed at revitalizing outdoor recreation through the Plymouth Playable Spaces programme. This initiative is designed to ensure that all children across the city have access to high quality inclusive and stimulating play environments. The funding will address ageing infrastructure while significantly reducing long term maintenance costs and safety risks.
A primary focus of the investment involves extensive makeovers for 20 existing play areas located throughout the city. In addition to these refurbishments the programme will establish four flagship destination sites. These major hubs including Central Park and a new development at Armada Way will be equipped with accessible equipment intended to support extended family visits. Furthermore the council plans to create 10 new nature playable spaces which will feature natural elements such as stepping stones dens and creative planting to encourage imaginative outdoor engagement.
